Minister Narendra Kashyap Reviews Flood Preparedness, Directs Officials to Ensure All Resources Are Ready.
Shahjahanpur, August 22, 2026: Uttar Pradesh Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Shahjahanpur’s District In-Charge Minister, Narendra Kashyap, reviewed the district’s flood preparedness during a meeting held at the Development Bhawan auditorium on Saturday.
During the meeting, the minister sought detailed information from concerned officials regarding preparations for dealing with possible flooding and issued necessary directions. The Executive Engineer, Irrigation Department, informed the meeting that there is no significant risk of flooding in the district during the next one week.
Despite the current situation being normal, Minister Narendra Kashyap directed officials to regularly verify all arrangements and ensure that relief and rescue resources remain ready so that immediate action can be taken whenever required.
He stressed the need for continuous communication with the public and directed officials to take their problems and suggestions seriously. He also instructed officials to inspect flood-prone and previously affected areas, identify vulnerable locations and ensure that all necessary arrangements at flood relief shelters are completed in advance.
71 Flood Posts and 60 Relief Shelters Identified
Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Arvind Kumar informed the meeting that disaster volunteers have been appointed and an NDRF team is operational in the district. Resources including tractors, JCB machines, steamers, life jackets, boats and motorboats have been arranged to deal with possible waterlogging and flood situations.
A total of 71 flood posts have been identified across the district—17 in Sadar, 25 in Tilhar, 6 in Powayan, 13 in Jalalabad and 10 in Kalan. These posts will be activated as required.
Similarly, 60 relief shelters have been identified, including 40 in Sadar, 6 in Tilhar, 6 in Powayan, 4 in Jalalabad and 4 in Kalan. Together, these shelters have the capacity to accommodate approximately 40,000 people.
80 Boats and 15 Motorboats Arranged
A total of 11 animal shelters have been identified, with a combined capacity of around 5,000 animals. The district has identified 80 boats and 15 motorboats, which will be made available through selected firms whenever required.
An Emergency Essential Resource Reserve Kit, including a motorboat and other modern rescue equipment, is available near Kalan Tehsil.
For rescue and emergency response, 20 divers, 7 medical teams, 30 doctors, 60 supervisors and 131 other personnel have been deployed.
Six Rivers and Several Drains Identified as Flood-Prone
The major rivers flowing through Shahjahanpur district include the Ganga, Ramganga, Khannaut, Garra, Gomti and Bahgul. Drains including Kaimua, Dabri, Bhaksi and Aril may also cause waterlogging and flooding during heavy rainfall.
For the protection of villages in Mirzapur Block along the left bank of the Ganga, the Bhaisaar-Dhai Ghat embankment has been constructed. It is 14.560 km long and benefits an area of approximately 1,400 hectares.
Similarly, the Azizganj embankment on the right bank of the Garra River in Sadar Tehsil is 1.50 km long and protects an area of approximately 95 hectares.
Work on six new flood protection projects has been completed, while the necessary resources for flood-fighting operations are available.
24×7 Control Room Operational
Flood Protection Committees have been constituted in 14 flood-affected villages. Tenders for flood relief kits, boats and motorboats, logistics arrangements at shelter homes and lunch packets have been completed. Arrangements for providing fodder and straw to animals during floods have also been finalized.
An NDRF team and a one-and-a-half-section PAC team have been pre-deployed at Hanumat Dham. Around 100 trained disaster volunteers are available to assist in emergency situations.
For early warnings, district- and tehsil-level WhatsApp groups have been created through which weather alerts are circulated. Warnings are also disseminated through various social media platforms.
